Dr Sechaba Thabo Palweni, of Limpopo, an abdominal transplant surgeon practicing at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. He also provides organ transplant services at various Netcare facilities. Dr. Palweni has served on the executive committee of the South African Society of Transplantation. He is deeply committed to advancing the field of organ transplantation, with a goal to enhance service provision, increase access, and promote equity.

Dr. Palweni received an education grant from the Netcare Foundation to undertake a fellowship in Liver Transplantation and Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery at the Rela Medical Institute Centre in Chennai, India. The centre is a high-volume facility with extensive experience in both living-related and deceased donor liver transplants, serving paediatric and adult patients. During this fellowship, he gained comprehensive hands-on experience in all aspects of liver transplantation from pre-admission work up to post operative follow up and care and explored robotic surgical techniques, with a focus on using technology to improve safety in donor hepatectomy. The Rela Institute has advanced to perform recipient liver explantation and implantation using robotic surgery, the goal is to develop similar capabilities within South Africa soon.
