Dr Sarah Berkenfeld is a paediatric gastroenterologist based at the Donald Gordon Medical Centre in Johannesburg. She divides her time between her private paediatric gastroenterology practice and the Paediatric Transplant Unit, where she plays an integral role in the multi-disciplinary care of children before and after liver transplantation.

Her clinical expertise spans the full spectrum of paediatric gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition, with particular interests in complex liver disease, intestinal failure, and nutritional rehabilitation. Dr Berkenfeld is deeply committed to delivering patient-centred, evidence-based care and to improving access to specialist services for children across Gauteng and beyond.

Known for her compassionate approach and meticulous attention to detail, she works closely with families to navigate challenging diagnoses and long-term treatment plans. She also contributes to clinical teaching and collaborative research within the transplant and gastroenterology teams.

Outside of medicine, Sarah is married with two young children and enjoys the daily balance—often precarious—of motherhood and medicine.
